In case you missed it, Ruger recently received reports that certain LCP pistols can discharge when dropped onto a hard surface with a round in the chamber. Ruger would like to retrofit all older LCP pistols with an upgraded hammer mechanism and other functional upgrades added since the pistol's introduction at no charge to the consumer.
All LCP pistols bearing prefix "370" (that is, serial number 370-XXXX) may be affected. Newly manufactured and retrofitted "370" prefix LCP pistols with the new hammer mechanism installed have been marked with a diamond in the flat portion of the slot just behind and below the hammer. Going forward, new pistols will be marked with the serial number prefix "371). Pistols with the "371" prefix are not affected.
To arrange for retrofitting, visit www.ruger.com/lcprecall and fill out the on-line form, e-mail lcprecall@ruger.com, call (800) 784-3701 or fax (928) 541-8873. Your name, address, telephone number and LCP serial number will be needed.

safe ice
The cold has been here for awhile now. But is the ice safe yet? It depends on what lake and where you are on the lake. Here is a guide put out by Minn DNR:
Four inches clear ice for travel on foot
Five inches clear ice for snowmobiles and ATVs
Eight to 12 inches for cars or small trucks
Twelve to 15 inches for medium size trucks
And thats good, clear, solid ice.

Hypothermia
Hypothermia means lowered core body temperature. Hypothermia can start in wet conditions. These can be rain, snow or sleet.
Often a victim does not recognize the danger signs.
-The first sign of hypothermia is shivering. If you are wet and chilled, you are in danger of hypothermia. Act immediately before you can no longer control the situation unless you get outside help.
-The victim loses control of the arms and legs. He/she may stumble or seem confused.
-The next step is muscle spasms.
-Total loss of body control may follow.
-Later the victim's skin turns bluish. Muscles become rigid and breathing and heatbeat become weak.
HYPOTHERMIA IS A KILLER. The advanced stages are very dangerous. A doctor or trained medical specialist needs to treat there stages.

10 Commandments of Safety
Hunting season has started and it doesn't hurt to review the 10 Commandments of Safety.
1. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
2. Guns should be unloaded when not actually in use.
3. Don't rely on your gun's "safety". Treat every gun as if it can fire at any time.
4. Be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Once you pull the trigger you can't stop it.
5. Always use the correct ammunition.
6. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, handle with care.
7. Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting.
8. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before shooting.
9. Don't alter or modify your gun and have guns serviced regularly.
10. Lean the mechanical and handling characteristics of the firearm you are using.
A Final Thought: There's one other rule you must follow when handling firearms. In fact, respect to this rule is necessary in order to effectively practice the ten commandments of safety. The rule is: shoot sober!!!!

grass fire
A fire was started at the range a couple of weeks ago. It was caused by shooters who were firing incendiary ammo. A round bounced into the dry grass and before it could be put out, it burned both the 200 and 100 yard back berm. The Babbitt Fire Department was called out and between the Fire Department and the shooters, it was quickly brought under control.
This has been the first time that something like this has occurred and rather than "ban" ammo, the membership, after much discussion, decided that when the fire danger in our area is high, signs on all three ranges would be posted stating: "due to extreme wildfire danger, these ranges are temporily closed to incendary ammo".
The grass is already growing back.

End of Trap Season
Is Your Rifle Ready for Hunting Season?
Last fall, did you have a scope fog up? How about broken parts like swivels, or stripped screws, maybe damaged sights, and you said: "No problem - I have a year to take care of that." Guess what - Your year is up!!!!!
If you need to see a GOOD gunsmith, you are probably already too late for this year. He is already behind.
You can improve accuracy by a good cleaning.
If you are using your old scope, make sure your mounts and rings are tight.

A Brief Club History
The Original Babbitt Conservation Club (BCC) was formed shortly after the construction of the Village of Babbitt in 1953. The Club was very active for a period of time until 1957. When the new concentrating and pelletizing facilities at the Silver Bay Division of Reserve Mining Company were completed many key BCC Babbitt employees were transferred to staff the plants and continuity was lost and the Club became inactive. Five years later, the Club was again reactivated and was incorporated on December 29, 1962 as a non-profit organization by Minnesota Statues.
In 1980, a fire destroyed the wooden clubhouse and the Club membership slowly declined and the BCC again disbanded. Early in 1995, past members reorganized and plans were made to reopen the shooting range.
Plans were made for a new clubhouse with propane furnace, handicap access bathrooms, septic holding tank system with drain field and to drill a new potable well for drinking water and a flagpole. Major plans using approved National Rifle Association (NRA) range designs were drawn up for a dirt backstop for the three dirt bermed ranges. A 25-50 yard pistol, 100 yard and 200 yard rifle ranges with concrete bases, an overhead roof, wooden shooting benches and electric outlets completed each line.
In June of 1966, new construction began on a 28 foot wide by 40 foot building consisting of a poured concrete floor and walls and a steel metal roof with steel doors. A well was drilled and septic system installation were completed in the summer of 1997. In the fall, construction to make improvements to the rifle and pistol ranges began with the assistance of the Duluth National Guard installing a flag pole and minor work on the berms over the weekend. In the spring of 1998, construction again was started on the large dirt backstop and side berms of the shooting lanes. With grants from St. Louis County and matching funds for the Minnesota DNR and donations from local businesses and using local volunteer workers plus earth moving and hauling equipment from the Northshore Mining Company and the IRRRB, huge progress was made as the projects were completed in record time.
Work started on additional plans to move and modify the existing trap shooting facility. A new trap house building, semi-automatic trap thrower and concrete shooting stations wree installed with volunteer labor. The entire area was seeded and fertilized with new grass and hundreds of pine trees were planted around the perimeters. Additional storage buildins were purchased and refurbished to house maintenance and repair equipment.
