WAR ON DRUGS, OR ON GUN OWNERS'S RIGHTS?

As the issue of Mexican violence continues to boil over, it has become clear that for many anti-gun politicians, the war on drugs and the war on gun owners' rights are the same thing.
This past week, there were two more hearings in Congress on the topic of Mexican drug cartels. That brings the total to eight hearings so far, and there are field hearings already set to take place in Phoenix and Houston.

GOVENOR DOYLE SEEKS TO TRIPLE BACKGROUND CHECK FEE IN WISCONSIN

Governor Jim Doyle's (D) budget bill would raise the background check fee on handguns from $8.00 to $30.00. Your State Senator can be reached by phone at 608/266-2517. You can reach your State Representative at 608/266-1501. You are encourage to attend hearings on the budget by the Joint Finance Committee and express your opposition to any increase in the background check fee.

ANOTHER MINNESOTA GUN REGISTRATION BILL INTRODUCED

On Thursday, March 5, State Senator Yvonne Prettner Solon (DFL) Dist 7, introduced Senate File 1165, in yet another attempt to end private firearm transfers in Minnesota. No action has been taken other than referred to the Judiciary Committee. SF 1165 is the companion bill to House File 953. SF 1165, like HF 953, was designed to not only regulate the sale of firearms at gun shows, but to regulate the sale of firearms between all law-abiding persons, across Minnesota. Also contained in SF 1165, is a de facto registration system created by requiring the records of all transfers to be maintained by the state, which would be made available to all authorities, including for use in "civil" cases. SF 1165 would also remove the permit holder exemption from a background check and even increase the waiting period from five to seven days. SF 1165 is a direct attack on Minnesotains' Second Amendment rights and needs to be stopped.
Additional Senate Authors are: Senator Leo T. Foley (DFL) Dist 47; D. Scott Dibble (DFL) Dist 60; John P. Doll (DFL) Dist 40 and Ellen R. Anderson (DFL) Dist 66.

Trouble in Mexico?

Congress holds hearings on Mexico Border Violence. Over the past few weeks, the number of stories in the press regarding the escalating violence in Mexico has dramatically increased. Now, hardly a day goes by when another story describing the atrocities committed by violent drug cartels cannot be found in an American newspaper or on a cable news channel. Anti-gunners say, "Blame America". Gun owners need to pay attention to these stories, because the opponents of our Second Amendment rights are starting to use this situation as a pretext to push their gun ban agenda here in the United States.

CONCEALED CARRY IN NATIONAL PARKS SUSPENDED

On Thursday, March 19, a federal district court in Washington, D.C. granted anti-gun plaintiffs preliminary injunction against implementation of the new rule allowing law-abiding citizens to defend themselves by carrying a legal concealed firearm in national parks and wildlife refuges. In Thursday's ruling, Federal District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotell issued the preliminary injunction against the Department of the Interior rule that took effect on January 9, 2009.

FURY OVER OBAMA PLAN TO BAN SEMI-AUTOS

Outrage swept through the firearms community after Attorney General Eric Holder revealed to ABC News that the Obama Administration plans to revive the ban on semi-automatic sport-utility rifles and shotguns as part of its push to ratchet down on the gun rights of American citizens.
Holder's pronouncements got quick attention-and dismissal-from Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Perhaps mindful of the losses suffered by Democrats voting for gun control issues, including a semi-auto ban, during the first Clinton Administration, Pelosi told "The Hill" newspaper that new anti-gun initiatives are not on the table, and that the better strategy would be to enforce existing laws.

SCOTUS HANDS BLOOMBERG DEFEAT

In a stinging defeat for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and gun control advocates seeking to hold firearms manufacturers liable for crimes committed with guns, the US Supreme Court rejected the city's request to continue a lawsuit that was filed nine years ago.
The court also declined to hear a similar case out of Washington, D.C.
