Moose

Now this is what a trophy moose should look like. Pictures were taken last fall in Canada just across the boarder from Vanceboro, Maine.

HR45

HR45 was introduced into the House of Representatives in early January, just days after the 111th Congress convened by a Illinois Congressman. The bill would required the licensing of all handgun owners and anyone who owns any semi-automatic handgun, rifle or shotgun that accepts a detachable magazine; would require a federal registration system for all transfers of "qualifying firearms". The bill would require private citizens to apply for a firearm license to the Attorney General, and pass a test on safe handling and storage of firearms, the use of firearms in the home and risks associated with such use, and the legal responsibilities of firearms owners, including a knowledge of federal, state and local laws. Each citizen applying would have to open his mental health records to the Attorney General and submit a passport photograph with their name, address and the date and place of their birth. It would be renewable every five years and can be revoked. Under this bill, it would be illegal to sell, deliver or transfer a firearm to anyone who is not licensed. In addition, nine months after the date of enactment, this legislation requires the Attorney General to establish and maintain a federal record of sale system that would log every firearm transfer conducted in the United States that is processed by a federally licensed firearms dealer. It also eliminates the prohibition on gun registration that is now a part of federal law.

Ice Safety - Save yourself!

Make a set of ice rescue claws

Instructions for Making Ice Claws

1. Get two 4" pieces of wooden doweling the size of a broom handle or a little larger. Whatever material you select, it should float in case you drop the claws while struggling.
2. Drive a stout nail into one end of each dowel. This should be a hardened 16 penny or larger concrete nail.
3. Use a file to sharpen the nail heads to a point.
4. Drill a hole into the dowels (in the end opposite the nail) and tie a length of strong cord through the hole so a pick is on each end "jump-rope" fashion. You may also drill a hole in the ends alongside the nails so the nail on the other pick can nest in the hole, keeping both points covered. Keep the picks in your pocket for quick emergency access if you or a companion do break through.

Ice safety tips

***Many ice drownings involve children. When your child is near the ice, you should be near your child.
***Avoid alcoholic beverages when you're on the ice. They can make you feel colder and slow down your reaction time in case of an ice emergency.
***Carry two large nails to use as ice picks to pull yourself out if you fall through the ice.
***Never drive on the ice at night.
***Avoid pressure ridges, and areas with current if you do choose to drive on the ice.
***Drive with your windows down and doors partially open to avoid becoming trapped if your car breaks through.
