A report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that persons using public lands in the U.S. have a greater risk than ever before of being harmed by armed individuals involved in illegal border activity and marijuana cultivation. "Hunters, hikers, and other members of the public, as well as agency employees, have been shot, shot at, kidnapped, and threatened with violence", said the report. As a result, the GAO said the Bureau of Land Management increased its number of law enforcement officers by about 40 percent since fiscal year 2000, the Forest Service by almost 18 percent during the same period and the Fish and Wildlife Service by about 26 percent since fiscal year 2006.
